The wind through the trees
a mid-summer's breeze.
that whispers and wanders
softly through the leaves.

A lush green valley
with tall elms and stream,
flowers and grasses
and all in between.

A crack in the bushes
and the doe is awake,
ears perked and alert;
her life is at stake.

A squirrel skitters through branches,
a bird flutters in the brush,
the forest is quiet;
the song birds have hushed.

A crack again, this time
sharper than before.
The deer lies down again;
Her life is no more.
