Rozelle Court

(For my brother, Sam 1965-1984)

He stops you to ask if you're really from Carlton, like your shirt
You stand there, looking at him, this graduate in economics, the cook in a courtyard cafe, and think:
"I like cooking, so I won't mind this job in about six years."
Later, sitting at the table, you realize that he even breaks plates like you do.

1985

A year has past
since last I came
and in the time I've grown
but the cafe's stayed the same.

In that year I hated
you, for abandoning me.
But I realize now, that though you died
you can never leave me.

So many things have come
and gone,
but memories of you
go ever on.

And the economics major is still breaking plates.
